Utah and I - Neature (part 3)

Day 204 / Mile 22,880

After taking a little break by spending some time with the homeys in Salt Lake City, the road was calling me to Southern Utah. The temps were getting higher the further I traveled down the state. Cranking the AC helped during the drive, but my sleeping situations were barely tolerable even with a fan running all night long.

Roadside oddities. I didn't really know what I saw out of the corner of my eye, so I pulled a u-turn and was shocked when I rolled up on this scene.

Along the route was Mystic Hot Springs. The place was a classic dive, and had a really cool character because of that.

It was super hot this day, so before I paid $15 I wanted to check it out first. There was also a mineral pool with some couples hanging out, but this is what you really come for.

If I was here at sunset I would have jumped in and stayed for a while, but instead got back on the road.

Bryce Canyon, with it's glorious amphitheater of hoodoos.

If you go, hike through the Queens Garden & Navajo trail.

At the end of the National Park's road is Rainbow Point. If you're afraid of heights, you're screwed. Past this weathered Bristlecone is the trail along a windy cliff band.

Getting to this secluded backcountry spot was dicey. I nearly got stuck a couple times on a sandy road, but growing up knowing how to drive in the snow saved me. It was worth it, this backcountry sunset was glorious!

I made it to Zion National Park, and so did the heat.

Summer is the best time to hike into The Narrows, or you'll want to wear a wetsuit. There isn't any trail other than walking through the Virgin River.

You can hike as far as you want, which can be a couple days if you bring a walking stick and  waterproof bag for your camping gear.

I went about 3 miles before finding this great spot for a self-portrait. I set my tripod in the middle of the river, hoping the legs held up in the current.

I got my GoldCoast kit out, rolled down that flat spot in the background and mashed my soft wheels into the bumpy transition for this ollie. It took a hundred times to get this self-portrait and sweated a gallon to get it, but it was a fun and unique spot.

The next day I got up super early for a hike up Angels Landing to avoid the heat and other tourists. This thing is serious!

First sunlight an hour into the hike, and I was already sweating my butt off.

Trust.

A number of people have died here. If you fall, you're done for... see those buses 1000' down there??

The name came about because it was thought, "Only an Angel could land upon it".

After hiking for a couple hours my confidence built up enough to sit on the edge of this 1500' cliff.

At the very end of the line are a bunch of cairns. These few were my favorite with the great view behind.

Zion was a great experience, and I would definitely go back with friends if anybody wants to. I could stay forever, but the adventure must continue and southbound I am again!
