Day 175 / Mile 21,430

So far I've explored some very desolate regions of America, but none were quite like New Mexico and the empty space of Bisti Badlands. Getting lost out there was crazy, experiencing the adrenaline of going into survival mode was mildly exciting, though a stress I could live without. I was confident with my little safety kit that we would have survived overnight in the desert, but it was nice I didn't have to put into use.

The Cliff Dwellings are a genius design. ...except for if there was an earthquake!

Heading out of town towards the mountains I got into some gloomy weather. I needed a car wash anyhow.

It got wild, rocks were all over the place. The roads weren't slick, but got up into some fresh snow.

Red Mountain Pass was a big one, nearly overheated my van's engine and had to hang out for a few minutes to cool down.

Up on a mountain side I saw this old mine and hiked up to it. Just imagine this wood reclaimed and used for decoration in fancy artisan craft-cocktail lounge.  Hahahaa, it would be so hip.

Exploring Colorado was only a two day trip, but it nice to get into the mountains again. I dropped my copilot off at the airport and just down the road met up with another friend, my journalistic bike riding buddy, Ben Gavelda. We caught up over a burger and a beer, then I camped out in his driveway. A storm was looming on the horizon, so the next day I was off Utah.
